Vernon County committee reviews 2025 budget preview and reports $345,158 opioid-settlement balance

At its Sept. 11, 2024 meeting, the Vernon County Opioid Prevention and Steering Committee reviewed a 2025 committee budget preview and received an update on the county’s opioid-settlement funds.
Cassandra Hanan told the group the committee’s budget is noted at $71,102 for 2025 and that the county’s full budget review with finance is scheduled this month. Later in the agenda she reported the opioid-settlement fund balance at $345,158.15 and an additional deposit of $33,000. The committee did not take policy action on the budget at the meeting but recorded the figures for future planning.
Jill Bender, Vernon County Human Services Director, said she has a proposal for an Opioid Prevention Coordinator position to help manage settlement grants and grant administration; the committee agreed to place that proposal on the Oct. 9 agenda for review. Health Officer Amy Kleiber said medication lock boxes would be distributed at the Vernon County Fair that week. Mary Henry noted ongoing awareness efforts by the Amara Rose foundation and suggested the sheriff’s department consider grant support; LaFarge Police Officer S. Palmer suggested Amara Rose reach out to the Tomah VA for additional support.
The committee set its next meeting for Oct. 9, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. in the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office Training Room with remote access via Teams. Agenda items include the McIntosh Memorial Library application and consideration of the proposed Opioid Prevention Coordinator position.
