Optimum updates council: Nutmeg Network petitions PURA to manage PEG channels; decision expected by late July or early August

Brian Smith, Optimum’s director for Connecticut government affairs, briefed the Litchfield Cable Television Advisory Council on an ongoing proceeding before the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).
According to Smith, the Nutmeg Network has petitioned PURA to assume responsibility for PEG (public, educational and government) channel programming and studio management from current providers including Cox, Charter, Comcast and Optimum. Nutmeg is seeking the $11.26 per-user allocation that is designated for public service.
Smith said the trial began June 8; Optimum presented arguments on June 10, and hearings were expected to continue through the week ending June 19. He reported that Comcast has left the case and is negotiating directly with Nutmeg. Smith told the council that a PURA decision could be expected by the end of July or early August.
The council recorded the update during its June 11 meeting and noted that Optimum would continue to participate in the PURA process. The meeting then adjourned at 6:57 p.m.
