Somerton honors parent-educators and science-fair finalists

The Somerton Elementary District governing board paused routine business to celebrate recent parent and student achievements.
Mka Martinez, representing the nonprofit All In Education, introduced and recognized district parents who graduated from the Parent Educator Academy. Martinez said the 2024 cohort served about 140 parents across Yuma, Pima and Maricopa counties and that 11 Somerton District parents were among recent graduates; she said roughly 293 students benefited from parent engagement tied to the program. Martinez thanked the parents and acknowledged an alumni facilitator, Daniel Erera, who assisted small groups.
The board also recognized students who advanced from the county science fair. Student Kiana explained her project — testing which laundry detergent best removed stains — and reported that Oxy detergent performed best in her experiment. Staff noted Kiana, a sixth grader, competed in the sixth-grade category that is judged with seventh- and eighth-graders and that Sophia was another finalist representing the district at the county Expo.
Board members applauded the parent and student recognitions. The superintendent and staff encouraged attendance at the Somerton Thriving Achievers recognition event later in the week.
