Superintendent: 120 bicycles donated, winter programs and safety trainings highlight district activity

Somerton Elementary District Superintendent Mr. Gon reported to the board that schools are busy with winter programs and that the district will receive a donation of 120 bicycles from Radel and Associates, to be delivered the following day.

In his regular report, Mr. Gon described schools as a “hub of the community” and encouraged board members and residents to attend school events or follow school social media to see program highlights. He said the bicycle donation will be distributed to schools and raffled to students, with district staff and custodians assisting equitable distribution.

Mr. Gon also described stepped safety work: two schools have completed Run, Hide, Fight training and the district is completing baseline reviews of emergency operation plans with law-enforcement partners. Once plans and staff training meet expectations, the district will pursue more systematic and surprise drills with police so officials can identify blind spots and improve reunification, communications and radio redundancies.

Board members praised school events, thanked donors and congratulated reelected trustees. The superintendent said capital‑project walkthroughs continue and staff will report on next steps where funding and scope permit.

Next steps: the bicycle delivery is planned for the next day and raffle/distribution procedures will be coordinated with school principals and central staff; safety training and additional drills will continue after baseline plan reviews and feedback from law enforcement.
