Principals report strong start to school year as enrollments rise across Somerton district

Principals across the Somerton Elementary District told the governing board on Aug. 13 that the new school year has begun strongly, with full staffing in many schools, active student-engagement programs and steady or rising enrollment at multiple campuses.
Desert Sonora principal Mrs. Arondo told the board the campus is fully staffed, reported a strong open-house turnout (278 families) and said teachers used Kagan engagement structures and planning time to prepare. ‘‘Students came ready to learn,’’ she said, and described planned assemblies, student council elections and intervention starts.
Orange Grove principal Miss Middleton described daily gate greeters, a student-ambassador program, penny-war fundraisers and the school’s fifth year as a national showcase school. She reported 411 students as of the morning of the meeting and loop-lane dismissal times around 14–15 minutes.
SVS principal Mr. Munos outlined substantial growth: his campus grew from roughly 90 students in the first year to a reported 253–254 after the 10th day, with new after-school robotics and folkloric programs and a recently hired ESS teacher. He noted classroom-space pressures and said a storage container is being sourced to ease facility constraints.
SMS administrators reported launching a digital hall-pass tool (MinGa), a Thrive program beginning Sept. 9 and new electives working with the high school. Encant Learning Center and other elementary principals likewise described successful open houses and manageable arrival/dismissal operations (Looper Lane reported between about 14 and 25 minutes at different sites).
Principals also described supports for instructional staff, new coaching and strategy work, and closer outreach with district leaders. Several board members and administrators praised the welcome-back events and the district leadership summit as evidence of improved communication and readiness.
