Board approves choir trip to Hawaii after debate over cost and cadence

The Prescott School District board approved an overnight choir trip to participate in the Aloha Music Festival in Hawaii, after extended discussion about cost, fairness and scheduling cadence.

Administrators described the trip as an educational performance and cultural exchange tied to the festival, and stressed that families would pay their own way and that fundraising and payment plans are available. "There is no taxpayer burden," an administrator told the board.

Several board members expressed concern that choir trips occurring every two years could limit participation by families who cannot afford repeated, high-cost travel. Vicki asked that such trips be scheduled on a four-year cadence like band trips, saying, "I would much rather that those types of trips be on that same type of schedule where it with band it's worked out every four years," and warned repeated frequent trips could isolate families who cannot afford them.

Administrators said the choir schedule this cycle aligns with a planned choir rotation and that the proposed trip would reach a largely different group of students than earlier excursions. The board discussed options for synchronizing band and choir travel plans in future years to maximize participation.

A motion to approve the overnight trip was moved and seconded and carried on a voice vote with recorded opposition; administrators will work with travel providers and families to confirm participant minimums and finalize logistics.

The district noted a minimum of six participants would be required by the travel company to proceed and said it would not use district taxpayer funds for the trip.
