The Buckeye Union School District said March 4 it has prepared a draft response to the county's draft Environmental Impact Report for a proposed Costco warehouse and gas station planned near Oak Meadow Elementary School and will submit those comments through the formal review process.
Superintendent David Roth, Ph.D., told the Board the District's letter focuses on potential impacts to students and staff, particularly concerns about health and safety near the school. Board Member Jon Yoffie, who reviewed the draft EIR and helped prepare the District response, said the letter requests additional analysis of alternatives and mitigation measures specific to the school site.
Board members noted community concern about locating a large retail development and a fuel station adjacent to a campus used by young children, while acknowledging the property's existing zoning for large-scale retail. Trustees discussed options they want the county to study further, including moving the gas station closer to the freeway or locating the project within the nearby business park instead of adjacent to the school.
The Board did not take a final position at the March 4 meeting; trustees voted to continue the item to their March 18 meeting to allow additional review and to collect further public input. The district's drafted response will be filed as part of the county's EIR comment period and may be considered by the Planning Commission and, if appealed, by the County Board of Supervisors.
