Board approves girls flag football co-op after lengthy debate about impact on soccer and other programs

The Clarion-Limestone Area School District board voted to approve a shared-service co-op that will allow the district’s girls to participate in a flag-football program hosted by Clarion-Limestone in the 2026–27 school year, following extended discussion about the possible impacts on other girls’ sports.

Trustees discussed concerns that adding flag football in the fall could draw participants away from girls’ soccer, volleyball and softball and potentially reduce playing time for some athletes. Several members said parents and coaches had expressed worries about roster and playing-time effects; others said expanding low-cost opportunities could reach students who do not participate otherwise.

Administrators said initial costs would be minimal — largely limited to one season of shirts or basic uniform items — and that co-op partners would cover transportation for away contests. The board noted that some junior-high and JV/varsity structural decisions will be needed as the program develops and that district staff will monitor participation numbers because small enrollments can change quickly.

After discussion the board moved to a roll-call vote; the motion passed unanimously. The board also approved a separate, minimal-cost shared-service to form a girls wrestling team, allowing girls who currently compete on boys’ squads to have an independent girls’ team next year.

What happens next: The district will finalize inter-district cooperative agreements and coordinate uniforms, scheduling and transportation with co-op partners before the fall season.
