Denali Borough recreation committee advances Antler Ridge contract, Nordic-trail planning and new public pages

Community Development Director Stephanie told the committee both vault toilets at Antler Ridge are now open and that the trail construction contract was signed with an anticipated completion date of Aug. 31, 2027. "The contract for construction of the trail was signed this week," she said, adding she would share the contractor schedule when it becomes available.
Members discussed a "start-small" approach for Nordic ski trail development (short groomed loops, local groomer storage and volunteer help) to build momentum and allow the community to test operations before committing to larger investments. Staff noted that a railroad access/entry permit typically takes six to eight weeks to process and that administrative steps (site maps, parking/ plowing plans, volunteer management) should be completed in advance.
The committee also reported a new public web page, "Recreating in the Denali Borough," created by Amber and Nicole to list recreation opportunities by community and to provide project status updates. Members agreed to use upcoming community events (Strawberry Days, health fair) to table, distribute maps and recruit volunteers for subcommittees working on the trail, outreach and range projects.
What's next: Staff will circulate design and orientation-board language for Antler Ridge by Aug. 1 and prepare permit-application materials for the Nordic trail railroad access permit. The committee set its next regular meeting for Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. and will coordinate outreach presence at summer community events.
