Commission reviews maintenance, abandoned-aircraft process and signage updates

Commissioners received several operational and safety updates affecting tenants and airport users.

Staff reported one abandoned airplane remains on the field; the owner has been sent a removal letter and staff is in the 30-day waiting period. "If he was not removed, I think in 30 days the letter then we'll start the process of abandonment and removal," staff said, and estimated the full abandonment/removal process could take one to three months based on past cases.

Tenants described damage to propellers and the need for frequent prop maintenance caused by loose aggregate on apron surfaces. "We're picking up a lot of rocks, a lot of pebble," one tenant said, arguing that more frequent sweeping and crack sealing are short-term mitigations but that repaving is the long-term fix. Staff said crack sealing targets cracks only and does not address uneven levels; sweeping is done a few times a year but may need to be more frequent.

Project updates included installation of combination locks on electrical panels in each hangar, distribution of codes to tenants, and completion of noise-abatement signs scheduled for installation. Commissioners also discussed updating the FAA chart supplement and the possibility of a short AWOS message. A member of the public requested improved wayfinding on Airport Road; commissioners suggested adding a permanent monument sign at Baumann and Airport Road as a future agenda item.

No formal directives were taken beyond standard staff follow-up: staff will continue the abandonment process timeline, coordinate installation of signage and locks, and rely on the ALP and pavement engineering deliverables to pursue construction funding.
