Trustee nomination to TASB board fails after trustees split on benefits

Trustee Melissa Simler moved to nominate herself as Conroe ISD’s representative to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) board for Region 6 and as delegate to the TASB 2026 assembly. Trustee Simler argued filling the seat would give the district a voice on statewide policy and provide a conduit for information from other districts. Tony Hopkins, TASB board president, attended and answered trustees’ procedural questions.
Several trustees voiced concerns that accepting a TASB director position is tantamount to endorsing TASB’s positions and might create conflicts with local priorities. One trustee said the district should strengthen local control rather than cede influence to a statewide organization. Another trustee described positive experiences working with TASB and said a seat could provide networking and operational benefit. After extended discussion the nomination was put to a vote and failed (recorded as 2–5). Trustees who opposed the nomination cited transparency and accountability concerns; supporters cited information sharing and advocacy value.
Why it matters: TASB wields influence on policy, training and risk management in Texas public education; whether a district holds a director seat affects how that district’s viewpoints are represented in statewide deliberations. Conroe ISD trustees remain divided over whether holding the seat advances local priorities.
