Salem Central School District trustees spent the meeting outlining what they want in a new board president and how the board will organize next year, but they took no formal vote.
Board members said the president must be a strong facilitator who listens to all viewpoints, honors the board’s collective authority and the “power of five,” and avoids directing district staff. One trustee described the seat as “a lightning rod position” that draws public feedback and requires the holder to balance public-facing communications with procedural order. Another said the president’s role should focus on mediation and “ensur[ing] that everybody has an opportunity to share their thoughts.”
Several trustees said they were willing to serve if needed but also voiced apprehension about the time commitment and public scrutiny. One member said they were “unquestionably willing to do whatever I can to make the group of five the best board that we can be” but added they were ‘‘a little scared’’ about the visibility of the role. Others emphasized that the board must work together and that leadership is about cultivating the full board, not concentrating authority in one person.
Trustees agreed to convene an agenda-planning meeting before the reorganization so whoever serves as president will have participated in preparing the July reorg agenda. The board also confirmed logistics for the reorganization: an incoming member will be sworn in July 1 and confidential executive-session matters will be handled to avoid exposing non‑indemnified participants to personnel discussions before they are sworn in.
Next steps: the board will invite candidates to the agenda-planning meeting, confirm the reorganization timeline in July, and leave the formal selection for the reorganizational meeting. The discussion was framed repeatedly around the district’s mission and a desire to present decisions to the public in a way that explains why the board has taken a particular course of action.
