District officials explained the Native American Language Program award is competitive and intended to support teacher stipends, extended assignments and culturally related initiatives in the current fiscal year. At the meeting, staff said some grant funds are covering expenses that were already incurred this fiscal year because the awards arrived late in the budget cycle.
Other approved adjustments included a $12,500 "hard-to-staff" allocation, $525 for a spring attendance conference, $344,729 for IDAB and $9,447 for preschool IDAB. Board members asked follow-up questions about how many Dine9 (Navajo) and Zuni language teachers the district currently employs, how language instruction is offered (on-site hubs, early-start models and MOUs with local institutions), and whether language coursework can connect to scholarship eligibility such as the Chief Manuelito Scholarship.
The motion to approve the six inter-fund budget adjustments carried on a roll-call vote. District finance staff said the funds will be used to extend teacher assignments, purchase long-term supplies for Indian education programming, support credit-recovery and attendance initiatives and underwrite professional development tied to literacy and school improvement.
