Local boxing program pitches free gym and regional events to boost Center Point businesses

El Grayson, who identified herself as a coach with the TKO Boxing program, told the council she and other organizers plan to open a free amateur boxing gym in Center Point and to host regional events intended to bring visitors and revenue to local businesses.

"We plan to occupy one or more of the abandoned properties according to your fight the blight initiative," El Grayson said, describing a strategy to reuse vacant buildings for training and competition. She said TKO Boxing provides free training, focuses on youth development and hopes to "coach the next generation of boxing Olympians," and argued that multi‑day amateur events would draw participants and families from across the Southeast, driving hotel, food and retail spending in the city.

During questions, council members and community members discussed possible locations — organizers highlighted vacancy near the post office as a candidate — parking and the scale of expected attendance (organizers estimated up to about 1,000 attendees per event). Council member Miss Van offered to share information on available chambers/grants and to connect TKO with the chamber of commerce director.

TKO representatives said they would provide paperwork and a printed summary to staff; they also said they already run free training programs and seek either financial assistance or grant guidance to secure a building and stage events. Council members encouraged follow‑up with the chamber and city staff on grant opportunities and site options.

The council did not vote on funding at the meeting but asked staff to circulate grant information and follow up with TKO Boxing on a formal request for assistance.
