Tim Reed (47903 283rd Street, Canton) introduced himself and said he is running for the District 16 seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives. Reed described his background in education (elementary principal and superintendent), service in the South Dakota National Guard, and ties to local agriculture. He said public education and support for small towns are priorities for his candidacy.
Later in the public comment period, Stacy Van Groningen (720 West 3rd Street) spoke emotionally about receiving letters from city code enforcement. She said physical and personal circumstances — including a shoulder injury and family care responsibilities — had limited her ability to complete property cleanup. Van Groningen told the commission she felt the enforcement was “heavy‑handed,” cited an instance she’d heard about an elderly man being given five days to mow or face a $500 fine, and asked only to be heard rather than receive an immediate response from the commission.
Staff and commissioners addressed community logistics after public comment. A staff member announced Canton Depot Days and a Depot Days 5K and invited signups. The city also announced a citywide cleanup scheduled for July 13–17, with two haulers engaged; Canton Home and Farm will sell mattress bags required for mattress pickup. Electronics collection was scheduled to start the following week with extended hours on Wednesday evening and Saturday.
The public comment speakers were allowed the standard five minutes; the commission did not take formal action on the concerns raised during the public comment period at this meeting.
