Council hears update on recent structure fires; investigations find accidental causes

The City of New Carlisle council on June 15 discussed a recent spike in structure fires after a member asked about causes during the meeting.
Chief Trusty reported that the city has experienced three working fires and five fires in the past two months. Investigations conducted by the local fire investigator, insurance investigators and the state fire marshal’s office determined the incidents were accidental and found no connections among them.
Councilman Bond asked about the cause of a recent blaze; the chief said the most recent was a grease fire. Council members praised community support for affected families and noted the Red Cross assisted with emergency housing the night of the most recent incident; social services also provided on-scene support.
Earlier in the meeting, social services and Chief Trusty discussed the department’s continuing smoke alarm program. Members of the public urged greater awareness of fire-department costs and operations; one commenter suggested residents watch the April 7 meeting segment for context on equipment and roadway costs.
Council took no new policy action at the meeting but asked staff to track investigations and community assistance needs as officials monitor fire activity in town.
