Police chief says approved new hire hasn’t responded; council agrees to continue search for part-time officer

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a candidate previously approved at the last council meeting has not responded to contact attempts and that he plans to reach out to the hiring consortium and the Civil Service Commission to arrange oral exams.
"I have tried to make contact but have had no luck. I am assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice said, according to the meeting minutes. He said the consortium list contains 32 candidates and said he would send out letters to pursue applicants. Pernice also said he would like the department to hire two part-time officers but noted only one part-time position had been authorized by the council; the council agreed to continue searching to fill the one approved part-time officer position.
The minutes do not record additional debate or a formal vote on hiring at this meeting. The issue was disclosed as an ongoing staffing action; Pernice said he will coordinate with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and proceed with contact efforts.
