Union City council to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation and public meeting

Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to proceed with the process to seek a Broadband Ready Communities designation through the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG). The council approved holding the required public meeting and passing a resolution authorizing EACOG to serve as the municipal broadband champion.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the designation creates an opportunity for additional internet service providers to consider serving the borough and that local permitting requirements align with the program’s recommendations. Councilor Kerns moved and Councilor Joyce seconded proceeding with the public meeting and the resolution; the motion passed unanimously.
Council did not adopt the resolution at the July 9 meeting but authorized the next steps to hold the public meeting required by the program and to complete application materials with EACOG support.
