Copperton reviews parks master plan, residents push for more courts and a dedicated sports field

MSD staff and a Landmark Design consultant presented the early findings of a parks master plan to the Copperton Town Council on June 17, telling the council the town is well served by park acreage but lacks a dedicated sport field. Neil Guarini, a long-range planner with MSD, said the inventory used a visual inspection tool and invited the town to help set priorities for concept designs.
The consultant said the town currently has about 9.5 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents, well above many larger communities, but noted that the figure could fall if the town experiences growth. The consultant added that Copperton Park “is serving your community really well” but flagged the absence of a formal sport field and some playground pieces showing wear.
Council members and residents suggested a range of improvements. One councilor urged more pickleball courts, noting existing courts are in heavy use; others raised volleyball and flexible open-grass areas for informal soccer, frisbee and youth play. Council members also discussed upgrading the roundhouse’s electrical service and paint, adding benches and picnic tables, and relocating unused hockey space for practice walls or courts.
MSD staff said the parks inventory relied on ArcGIS Survey123 and visual condition ratings; they reported only a handful of local survey responses so far. To boost participation, staff proposed yard signs, postcards and QR-code flyers; council agreed to mail postcards and post QR-code signage at the town’s July 4 breakfast and other summer events. MSD said it will prepare concept designs showing how proposed elements might physically fit into Copperton Park and return for further council review and public open houses during town events.
The consultant and MSD staff also asked for input on Bingham Cemetery improvements and access, and council members noted a recent $50,000 donation to cemetery upkeep. Next steps include MSD producing concept layouts and expanded public outreach before the council selects a preferred direction.
