Board signs off on a package of curriculum adoptions, a cafeteria equipment contract and updates student-device policy

The Woodhaven-Brownstown Board of Education approved multiple curriculum and materials recommendations aimed at updating instruction across grade levels and funding sources.

The board adopted the Creative Curriculum for Preschool (funded by the GSRP grant, $39,810); Reveal Math for grades K–8 (four-year contract, $636,000 funded from the curriculum discretionary budget); My World Interactive social studies materials for sixth and seventh grades (each $63,145); CommonLit English Language Arts for grades 6–10 ($19,180); McGraw Hill’s Inspire for ninth-grade physical science ($19,648); and new high-school health curricula (Advocates for Youth and Essential Health Skills) to align with Michigan’s updated standards. Administrators described vendor reviews and professional-development plans accompanying each adoption.

Facilities and procurement actions included board approval to award Stafford Smith a contract not to exceed $192,377.90 (including a 10% contingency) to replace cafeteria serving-line equipment at Walled Lake Upper Elementary, funded from the food-service fund.

On policy, the board adopted revisions to the district’s wireless communication devices policy (second reading), aligning handbook guidance with recent state legislation and clarifying permitted exceptions, staff discretion, and parental notification. Board members discussed expected challenges with smart watches and student compliance but approved the revisions by voice vote.

All motions carried on voice votes with no recorded roll-call tallies provided; administrators said implementation plans, professional development, and required paperwork will follow.
