Sports commission presents events, economic impact and aquatics feasibility study to council

Mike Butler, representing the Greater Waco Sports Commission, presented to the council on the commission’s work to attract and run sporting events and programs that the commission says drive hotel stays and local economic activity. Butler said the commission generated about 21,000 hotel room nights and roughly $18 million in economic impact in the past year from events including Ironman Waco, Major League Fishing, esports tournaments and youth programming.

Butler outlined three pillars of the commission’s work: developing healthy youth and families (including a Team Waco scholarship program costing about $6,500 per athlete), supporting impactful events that bring visitors and hotel nights, and advocating for first‑class facilities. He said a $40,000 aquatics feasibility study concluded that the community could support an aquatics facility but that any project would likely require a public–private partnership and county and city cooperation.

Councilors asked about hosting large track meets and using private facilities such as Baylor’s track; Butler said public–private arrangements and institutional interest would determine whether those events could be brought to Robinson/Waco. Butler offered to share the feasibility study (he said he had presented it to the county commissioners and could provide copies on request).
