Two advisory committees presented annual reports at the board meeting.
Career readiness: Dr. Chris Green, chair of the Career Ready Advisory Committee, outlined four prioritized recommendations: hire career coaches for each high school (two additional positions), explore expansion of enrollment/access to skilled workforce training programs (for example New Horizons Career and Technical Center), increase college-and-career exposure opportunities for middle-school students, and strengthen literacy and math integration inside CTE courses to support workforce readiness. The committee also set goals to grow business partnerships and student/industry participation.
Special education: Michael Willen, chair of the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAK), described SEAK’s year of community engagement and inclusion work. Highlights included expanding membership to include at least one student representative, volunteer events (including Exceptional Games and a Family Funday with more than 100 families), a student serving as vice chair, and participation in the Virginia School Boards Association conference with a breakout session on collaborative practices. SEAK’s goals for the coming year include advancing inclusive policies, strengthening family engagement and community partnerships, and pursuing academic outcomes for students with disabilities.
Board reaction and next steps: Board members praised committee work and asked clarifying questions about funding and partnerships. Dr. Kever and committee chairs were asked to return with implementation planning, including potential budget implications for career-coach positions and partnerships to increase capacity at vocational centers.
