Nemaha County renews employee health coverage with Blue Cross/Blue Shield despite rate hike

NACO representatives Judd Allen and Mike Boden briefed the board on carrier options after Blue Cross/Blue Shield informed the county of a 14.65% premium increase. Allen presented a Medica quote that would lower premiums for the coming year but included no guarantee of favorable renewal rates the following year. After discussion, Commissioner Bryan Mellage moved, and Chairman Michael Weiss seconded, a motion to renew coverage with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. The motion passed on roll call; both commissioners voted aye.
Clerk's notes in the minutes state the total cost per employee under Blue Cross/Blue Shield is $1,454.61 per month and noted employer contribution for enrolled family/spouse/children coverage at 70% of premium cost. The board did not adopt Medica’s quote, citing the county’s preference for the provider and benefit stability. The renewal takes effect July 1, 2026.
No additional amendments to the county's contribution structure were recorded at the meeting.
