Duluth staff propose ice-skating or 'Frosty Fun' winter programming at $65,000

Jessica Gross, Duluth event coordinator, presented winter programming options for the activity lawn and Parsons Alley during the Feb. 27 work session.
Gross said staff had included ice skating in the 2023 events presentation and updated the budget with two ice options (real ice or synthetic) with either a 20-day run over winter break or a 45-day period beginning Thanksgiving break. As an alternative to a rink, Gross proposed a "Frosty Fun" package of 18 days of holiday programming for different age groups, with attractions such as live ice sculpting, winter games, magic shows, Who-ville/Grinch photo opportunities, snow slides and snow playgrounds. For Thanksgiving break she mentioned mini-golf, butterfly exhibits and roller skating as possible attractions.
Gross told the council the cost for the selected options would be about $65,000 and that the amount fits within the events budget. Council authorized staff to add the selected dates and program options to the next consent agenda for approval.
