The Enumclaw City Council voted May 26 to appropriate up to $15,000 on a trial basis for additional public-safety measures for the July 4 parade, following staff and Chamber of Commerce requests to address growing parade crowds and limited officer availability.
Council member Martineau outlined the safety request after a meeting with police, event planners and chamber staff and said the minimum professional safety infrastructure would cost about $15,000 per parade, including roughly $8,000 for temporary barricade rental and the balance for additional staffing. "The request is for funding of safety of $15,000 per parade, which includes $8,000 to go towards temporary barriers," Martineau said.
Parks and event staff explained initial barricade quotes and said they pursued government pricing, which reduced earlier estimates. Staff warned deployment is labor-intensive — renting 4,000 linear feet of barriers for the route could require a 3–4 day setup window and would temporarily limit parking; staff recommended a trial approach and careful logistical planning to minimize business impacts.
Councilmember (speaker 3) moved to amend the original motion and limit the appropriation to up to $15,000 for the July 4 parade on a trial basis; the amendment passed and the final motion passed 5–1. Administration, the police department and the chamber will determine exact deployment and staffing; council asked staff to report back after the trial.
