The Enumclaw City Council voted May 26 to place a temporary sign at Rainier Trails Park encouraging users to "please limit use to tennis," after several residents and committee members raised concerns about noise, parking and public urination at the park.
Council member Smith moved for a sign to indicate the court is for tennis and to encourage users to use the newly resurfaced courts at Dwight Garrett Park for pickleball; the motion was seconded and prompted extensive discussion about enforceability and community impacts. "Is there a way for the community to sign off on this stating that they don't have complaints with the actual parking, noise, restrooms?" a council member asked, pressing for safeguards for nearby residents.
Staff and council emphasized the limitation that a sign alone would not create a codified restriction. Director Passanetti explained that this type of sign is "not enforceable" without codification and said staff could craft language that encourages users to use alternate courts and directs them to Dwight Garrett Park. "It's more instructive to people," Passanetti said of the proposed sign language.
Council members compromised on temporary signage and outreach: the council approved placing a temporary, laminated sign with wording that encourages tennis and points pickleball players to alternate courts; the motion passed. Staff will coordinate sign language, outreach to the pickleball group and monitoring, and council discussed revisiting the issue if complaints continue.
