Board approves consent agenda, discusses salary-step extension and routine agreements

The Rowan County Board of Education approved its consent agenda at the June 16 meeting, passing items that included surplus classroom supplies, memoranda of agreement with partner organizations, a services contract and routine policy items.
Among consent items discussed were a memorandum of agreement with Wilderness Education Project that funds an employee whose payroll will be administered through the district, and an annual MOA leasing classroom space to Gateway Community Head Start. A sergeant also summarized a continuing interagency agreement to provide education services at a nearby juvenile residential facility. The board approved an anonymous contract to provide hearing and related services for students with specialized needs.
Administrators discussed extending the certified salary-step schedule out to 30 years and applying comparable steps for classified employees. "We extended the certified salary a couple years ago all the way out to 30 years," one administrator said, noting the classified side had not been adjusted previously; staff said only about five or six classified employees would be affected and that a 30-year step is above the local standard.
The board heard the treasurer's monthly report showing an opening balance of $5,126,397.75, receipts of $3,190,472.70 and expenditures of $2,427,548.90, yielding an end-of-June balance of $5,889,321.55 before upcoming payrolls. The board also received the KSBA first reading of approved policy updates for 2026-27 and a superintendent report with dates to remember (including kindergarten registration July 9).
The consent agenda and personnel items were approved by voice vote; the meeting moved on to facilities updates and other business.
