Marlborough EDC hears town development updates, seeks new member and shared economic development staff

The commission approved the minutes of Jan. 15, 2026. Jillian LaCaresse moved to approve the minutes and Mark Paul seconded; the motion passed with “all in favor,” according to the minutes (tally not specified).
The minutes record that Schneider Electric on North Main Street is consolidating operations and will vacate its Marlborough location. Chair Mark Paul said he will investigate who owns the building to determine whether there may be leasing opportunities for other local businesses.
Under unfinished business the commission recorded several Town Center property updates. The minutes list an EV Café under construction; a solar farm being built just west of Route 66 and behind the former Commons; a self-storage facility just west of Route 2; and the Pieper Olson veterinarian site on Route 66 east of the center under construction. The minutes do not include project timelines or permitting details.
The commission also discussed its 2026 goals and current membership. The minutes note the EDC is short one member and that alternate Michael Canty has not been active since January 2025, which could create an additional vacancy. Vice Chair Jillian LaCaresse said she would check whether local small business owners might be interested in serving. “Some local small business owners might be interested in joining,” LaCaresse said.
Paul told the commission the town is considering creating a paid shared position for an economic development professional to support local businesses and commission initiatives. “The town is considering a paid shared position for an Economic development professional,” Paul said; the minutes do not record a vote or timeline for creating that position.
Mark Paul reported on planning for America 250 (AM250) events, saying several projects are in the planning phase and that the Preservation Society website will be the primary source for updates, with additional details in the River East publication. The minutes state that funding for AM250 events will come from donations.
The minutes include a new action item: Benjamin Maynard should review and sign the Expectation Agreement and email it to Mark Paul. No formal vote is recorded for that action in the minutes.
