The Spooner Area School District Board of Education met for its regular session and approved a package of routine business and policy updates.
Chair opened the meeting, confirmed a quorum and led the board through a series of motions that passed by voice vote. The board unanimously approved the agenda and consent items, and received routine administrative reports.
Dr. Banker presented personnel recommendations and asked the board to approve four hires. The board approved Katie Ike as head cross country coach; Tanya Hune as high school administrative assistant; Chad Krautcmer as evening custodian; and Shandra Stafford as the district’s new middle school principal, who the district said will start July 1 or sooner. "We have four individuals for recommendation this evening," Dr. Banker said, introducing the candidates. The board approved all four hires by motion and voice vote.
The board accepted donations to offset negative school meal accounts: an anonymous donation routed through Doc Coffee for $2,700 and a $500 gift from Patricia Swan, totaling $3,200. The Chair thanked the donors, saying, "It's very much appreciated." The trustees also approved a volleyball team fundraiser, expected to generate about $2,000 for tournament and equipment expenses.
Trustees reviewed and approved a renewal of the district’s hockey facility agreement with Seaha. The board noted the agreement is substantially the same as the current contract but includes a fee increase for the 2027–28 season; the agreement was approved by motion.
The board advanced several policy and handbook items. Trustees approved the first reading of proposed employee handbook updates and approved second readings of a Neola policy special update tied to Act 57 and Neola policy 2340 on district-sponsored field trips. The board likewise approved the second reading of proposed student handbook updates and the Spooner High School athletic code, after trustee Andrew Mountain reported having met with staff and recommending approval.
The board approved payment of annual membership dues to the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB), noting the dues remain unchanged from last year.
Board members convened into closed session by roll call later in the meeting. After returning to open session the Chair reported that no action had been taken during closed session. The board adjourned following that report.
Meeting proceedings included a brief public recognition of the Spooner girls softball team and coach Brian Amos for their season and state tournament appearance.
What happens next: most items were routine approvals. The new hires and policy updates will move forward per district personnel and policy implementation processes; the district indicated Shandra Stafford will begin July 1 or sooner. The closed session produced no reportable action.
