Van Zandt County Commissioners Court voted to authorize the county judge to sign the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) 2026–27 health insurance renewal, after staff presented historical costs and projected increases. County staff said the plan is a longstanding, grandfathered benefit that helps with recruitment and retention; presenters warned that leaving the plan would forfeit grandfathered benefits.
A staff history showed the per‑employee annual cost was $7,731 in 2022 and will be $12,046 for the 2026–27 plan year. Commissioners were told the increase adds roughly $135,000 to $175,000 to the county budget for the coming year, not including costs to cover any new employees. Several commissioners supported maintaining the plan because of its superior benefits, accepting the budget increase and authorizing implementation.
The county directed Human Resources to continue administering the benefit and to account for the added cost in the next budget cycle. The motion to authorize the county judge to sign the renewal passed by voice vote.
