Stephenson County Board adopts employee AI-use policy, schedules department training

The Stephenson County Board unanimously approved an AI use policy to guide employee use of artificial intelligence tools, adding the policy to the county employee handbook and scheduling department-level training.
Mr. Joegrist, who presented the measure out of the Administration Committee, said the policy was adapted from another county and reviewed before coming to the board. "It was brought over here and reviewed and so I'd like to make a motion to approve it," he said. The motion was seconded by Mr. Modero and passed 12-0.
Mr. Modero praised the work behind the policy, saying committee members had “checked and double checking” the text and consulted legal counsel. "This is a very secure footing to venture into the unknown," he said.
Board members discussed implementation details, including adding the policy to the employee handbook and providing training by department. Mr. Hadley asked whether the unions would need to be consulted; the board was told the handbook process governs application and training and that labor relationships would be respected.
The adoption does not specify prohibited AI products or technical controls in the motion recorded at the meeting; the board directed that staff proceed with handbook integration and training plans.
