Sky View senior and North Park fifth‑grader honored for America 250 contest entries

The Cache County School Board recognized two district students Thursday as grand‑prize winners in the America 250 essay and art contest coordinated by the Utah State Board of Education.
Vice President Kathy Christensen presented the awards. Leila, a senior at Sky View High School, accepted her $1,000 scholarship at the meeting and described the inspiration for her piece: "I wanted to do something with a flag ... I chose to put irises in it because irises used to be called flags a long time ago. I like the idea of using flowers because America just has a lot of beauty and I like painting flowers." A fifth‑grade student from North Park Elementary, James, also won a $1,000 scholarship but was unable to attend.
The board congratulated both students and encouraged continued participation in arts and writing programs. The awards are part of a statewide America 250 program funded through the Utah State Board of Education.
