Batavia council approves summer events, permits, licenses and several administrative measures
Summary
Council approved multiple community event permits and administrative items — including Arts & Culture Day, a Juneteenth celebration, a summer concert series, a 5K fundraiser, permits for festivals, a liquor license for the ice arena, capital project updates, and funding actions — and directed several items to be moved forward for final action.
The City of Batavia’s conference meeting on March 23, 2026, approved a slate of event permits, administrative updates and project items ahead of the business meeting.
Council granted approvals for a range of community events: the Batavia Development Corp. LG Arts and Culture Day at the City Centre (March 25); the All Babies Cherished 5K (June 6, start/finish at 350 Bank St.); GO ART’s Juneteenth celebration in Williams Park (June 20); the Batavia Concert Band’s free summer series in Centennial Park (Wednesdays, July 1–Aug. 12); the GO ART Ramble on Jackson Street (July 11); and Living Waters Community Outreach in Austin Park (July 26). Council approved a liquor license application for the David M. McCarthy Memorial Ice Arena after the police department registered no objections.
On administrative matters, Mrs. Tabelski presented several items that Council agreed to move forward, including reallocating remaining Centennial Celebration funds to Picnic in the Park for America’s 250th commemoration; supporting additional AIM aid from the governor’s budget with a recommendation to add the one-time funds to the fire reserves to support purchase of a new truck; approving the release of a committed fund balance connected to a Genesee Transportation Council study (GTC committed $80,000; City matched with $10,000); awarding a catch basins and grate contract to the low bidder to cover about 35 catch basins; approving DPW surplus items for auction; appointing members to the audit committee (members are or were CPAs and include Councilmembers); and updating capital project resolutions to add Richmond Avenue projects and the Naramore pump station. Two purchase-and-sale agreements tied to moving City Centre restrooms to a more central, ADA-compliant location were also advanced.
Lieutenant Huntoon reported Engine 11 refurbishment had been bid twice with no responses; the department obtained quotes and recommended awarding to the low quote. Council moved that item to the business meeting immediately following the conference session for final action. The conference minutes record Council’s agreement to move these items forward but do not provide vote tallies for most approvals.
Next steps: the business meeting will consider several advanced items, including the Engine 11 refurbishment award and the formal adoption or final approvals of the items moved forward from the conference meeting.
