Board recommends SAS/Envision for six-year K–12 math adoption
Summary
After a district review of state-approved materials and teacher-led vetting, the board heard a recommendation to adopt SAS/Envision K–12 for mathematics (six-year adoption) citing strong state HQIM ratings, vertical alignment and teacher supports; contracting could begin this summer.
Mrs. Stevie Alkins, the district teaching-and-learning coordinator, presented the district committee’s recommendation to adopt a six-year K–12 mathematics curriculum from SAS/Envision.
Alkins said the adoption followed vendor demonstrations, teacher piloting, classroom review and a rubric recommended by the New Mexico Public Education Department. She told the board the program received state HQIM scores above 90% overall and that the K–5 materials scored especially high. “This is a K through 12 implementation,” Alkins said, adding the program provides both digital and print resources, embedded assessments and professional-development supports the district plans to use.
The presentation emphasized four priorities that guided the review: standards alignment and rigor; coherent vertical progression across grades; culturally responsive materials that reflect the county’s students; and built-in teacher supports including professional development and on-demand resources. Alkins said the recommended program includes intervention and acceleration tools, an assessment platform and materials designed to reduce gaps when students move between schools.
Board members asked about timeline and teacher readiness. Staff responded they expect to contract this summer, schedule stakeholder meetings before the school year and use vendor-provided implementation boot camps and embedded two-hour sessions as part of the district’s PD calendar. The superintendent said contracting this summer would allow stakeholder meetings and an early start to implementation.
The board did not take a separate adoption vote during the presentation; staff indicated a formal purchase or contract approval will follow procurement procedures and be presented to the board when ready. The recommendation and presentation will guide forthcoming contract and implementation decisions, including professional-development scheduling and budget planning.
