County staff told commissioners during the June 4 meeting that the state asked the county not to publicly announce the specific grant source for a newly funded healthcare academy.
"We have been asked by the Go North people at the state not to publicly announce that the healthcare academy is funded right now by grant funds," said Chuck, a county staff member. He and other staff said the county can publicize the academy program itself but should avoid mentioning the rural health transformation grant funds until the state makes a broader announcement.
Staff and department heads described next steps: an information night for parents and interested individuals is scheduled for June 16, outreach to local schools is underway (Autumn had contacted five schools), and the county plans to bring grant stakeholders to a regular meeting after the county convention. Commissioners noted an executive committee meeting June 17 will consider pending delegation approvals for some related transfers, and the board scheduled a broader grants discussion for June 25.
Department staff also briefed commissioners on operational figures: the superintendent reported a facility headcount of about 210, a nursing-home census of 141 and assisted-living census of 49. Commissioners said they will coordinate the academy rollout with county events and with student on-site schedules.
The board discussed publicity limits and asked staff to check flyers and other materials to ensure they do not name the state grant until the state gives permission to do so.
