William (Bill) White, internal manager for Kobasin, delivered a first‑year transportation recap to the Merrill Area School District board Wednesday night, outlining routing, mileage and operational challenges ahead of a planned route consolidation.
White said the contractor ran 65 routes during the reporting period and logged 353,486 miles on district buses. The operation used a 30‑bus fleet and recorded 658 trips that included regular school service and special program pickups. The contractor documented 335 route changes over the year, including a reroute affecting 57 students when a bridge closure interrupted a route. White said 258 behavioral or operational referrals were entered into the district system for school adjudication; 11 of those referrals remained outstanding at the time of the report.
Administration credited Kobasin with a smooth transition and noted plans to consolidate dedicated routes from 24 to 22 for the coming year to achieve efficiencies. Board members thanked White for the work; White said he will be leaving his position soon to return to military service.
The board asked administration to follow up on outstanding referrals and to continue sharing route and trip data to monitor service and costs. Several board members praised the contractor’s responsiveness while signaling oversight expectations related to referrals and route performance.
