Van Buren County proclaims April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved two proclamations on March 23, 2026, recognizing April 2026 as National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Tammy Wetjen-Kesterson, CPPC and Decat Area Director, provided information on child abuse and neglect in Van Buren County and the State of Iowa and requested the Board's support for awareness activities. The Board agreed to allow a pinwheel garden to be placed in the courthouse front yard during April to draw attention to National Child Abuse Prevention Month and adopted the proclamation by roll call vote (Waugh, House, Meek Aye).
Representatives from the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP) and the Rape Victim Advocate Program (RVAP) — Allison Tippe, Andy Norveisas, and Maycee Piles — presented an update on their services and requested the Board proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Board approved that proclamation unanimously.
Both proclamations call for community awareness, prevention efforts and support for families and survivors, and will be filed in the county's official records.
