Vernon Township trustees adopt FY2026 amendment and approve FY2027 budget with lower fire levy

Acting Vernon Township trustees adopted an amendment to the township's fiscal year 2026 budget and approved the fiscal year 2027 budget with an adjusted fire-services levy during a recessed portion of the Van Buren County Board of Supervisors meeting on March 23, 2026.
The hearing on the FY2026 amendment drew no oral or written comments after the amendment was posted on the Iowa Department of Management website on March 10, 2026. Acting Trustee Waugh moved to close the hearing and adopt Resolution #2025-2 approving the FY2026 amendment; Trustees House and Meek seconded the motion. The resolution passed on a roll call vote with Waugh, House and Meek voting Aye.
Acting Vernon Township Clerk Lisa Plecker reviewed the proposed FY2027 budget and reported that she had met with Carrie Miller of the Bonaparte Fire Department on March 18, 2026, to review recent township tax payments to the department. Miller confirmed that no outstanding payments remained. After that discussion, the trustees agreed to lower the proposed levy rate for fire service and to use an anticipated carryover balance in the township's fire fund to provide the maximum dollars allowable by law for fire protection.
On motion by Supervisor Meek, seconded by Supervisor House acting as trustees, the hearing on the FY2027 budget was closed and the adjusted FY2027 budget approved; Resolution #2026-1 was adopted. The Board directed that the final township budget and tax certification be filed with the Van Buren County Auditor and certified to the Iowa Department of Management.
The board recorded its approvals in the official minutes and the adopted resolutions will be filed in the county auditor's office.
