During the March 10 meeting, Chairman Kent Grabill and Custodian Hansen reported a recent roof leak and a separate sewer backup that caused an emergency closure of the Courthouse on Friday afternoon. Custodian Hansen said a plumber will be dispatched this week to dig and locate the plugged area.
Officials emphasized the operational impact: inmates and dispatchers could not leave the building and needed access to restrooms during the outage. Supervisors discussed options to manage employee parking and operations during heavy snow events, including opening the Courthouse later to allow the city time to clear streets; they noted scheduled court dates and appointments would complicate delayed openings.
EMA Director Tyler Thygesen said the county can use the Alert Iowa system to send text notifications to employees about closures or delayed openings if the supervisors approve dissemination; Thygesen also noted that pre-planning meetings with local entities inform severe-weather decisions.
