Peachtree City council on June 18 approved a text amendment to Chapter 66 of the city’s sign ordinance to allow halo‑lit (reverse channel) backlit wall signs in retail, commercial and industrial zones subject to defined limits on color temperature and brightness.
Planning staff presented draft language that would create a definition for halo/reverse backlit wall signs, allow internally illuminated halo backlighting where previously prohibited, and set standards (for example, a maximum color temperature of 6,500 Kelvin and lumen thresholds drawn from existing signs in the city). Staff said a number of master sign programs already permit halo‑lit signs and that the amendment would close a loophole in which some halo‑lit signs were allowed only where master sign programs existed.
The public hearing drew no public comment. Council members discussed whether existing colored signs would be grandfathered and clarified that the draft ordinance would generally grandfather existing installations and allow white temperature ranges going forward, while existing master sign programs could continue to permit other treatments per their prior approvals. The council voted to approve the text amendment as presented.
