City receives state update on floodplain mapping; compiled maps to be forwarded to FEMA

City Administrator David Schmidt told the Broken Bow City Council on Jan. 27 that the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment sent a progress letter describing updated hydraulic modeling and continued floodplain boundary delineation in Zone A.
Schmidt said models and proposed mapping were submitted to the city, the city provided comments (Dec. 29, 2025), and the state responded on Jan. 16, 2026. He said projected tasks for the next quarter include finalizing mapping within the city, after which compiled information will be forwarded to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the next steps in the mapping process.
Zoning Administrator Jacob Holcomb explained that the letter indicates the state is still gathering information for preliminary maps and that the review and comment process will resume once mapping is compiled. He also said the city has not yet received word on the Hazard Mitigation Grant referenced in the minutes.
No formal action was taken on the mapping at the meeting; the council was provided an informational update and no vote was recorded on the floodplain work or grant status.
