Wythe County Board adopts FY27 budget, county code and several administrative measures

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors adopted a $117.3 million FY27 budget and CY26 tax levy, approved a consolidated county code and fee schedule, and approved multiple administrative items including an employee bonus ordinance, property conveyance, grant acceptances and procurement actions.
The Wythe County Board of Supervisors adopted its FY27 County and School budgets and the CY26 tax levy during the June 9 meeting, approving a budget totaling $117,299,717 and levying a real‑estate tax rate of $0.51 per $100 of assessed value.
During the same meeting the Board approved a package of administrative and fiscal actions:
- Adopted a consolidated County Code and a fee schedule effective July 1, 2026; no fee increases were implemented at this time and future fee changes will be handled through the annual budget process.
- Approved an Employee Bonus Ordinance, extending a bonus to county employees, constitutional officers, the school system and Department of Social Services staff (motion by Supervisor Jesse R. Burnett; unanimous among those present).
- Authorized the chairman to sign the deed for conveyance of the former jail property (parcel 41A‑1‑33‑4) in compliance with the county’s Emergency Services agreement with the Town of Wytheville.
- Approved payment of county invoices and wire transfers covering General Warrants 30138596–30138708 and two wire transfers, authorizing total expenditures of $6,014,505.99; Mr. Bear stated $4.5 million of that total repaid interim financing closed with Rural Development.
- Accepted a federal FY26 Byrne Justice Assistance grant for $33,333 and approved a $90,000 U.S. Forest Service carryover award for the Sheriff’s Office (appropriating $30,000 to forest overtime and $60,000 to forest supplies).
- Approved budget amendments and purchases for fleet replacement in Animal Control, including a $28,045 amendment for a replacement truck and authorization to issue a $37,455 check for a used truck (Purchase Order 20261942).
- Approved engineering term contracts for a set of firms as recommended by committee, and approved final change orders reducing amounts on the Barrett Mill Road water project (Division 1 deduct $341,042.00; Division 2 deduct $545,813.20).
Votes on the recorded motions were made by roll call. Most votes were unanimous among the six supervisors present; one member (Stacy A. Terry) was absent. Mr. Bear noted that the county will appropriate first‑quarter amounts on June 30 and may amend the budget if the state adopts its budget before then.
What happens next
Several items (notably the Progress Park site plan, engineering contracts and water‑rate changes) require follow‑up steps by staff and may be subject to public hearings or administrative review. The Board also authorized staff to form two task forces (including School Board members) to plan how any future data‑center revenue could be directed toward school and community infrastructure.
