Board begins process to name Hilton Head lacrosse field for late athletic director
Summary
The Beaufort County Board of Education voted to initiate a community-naming process under policy GC-3 section 8 to name an ancillary athletic facility (lacrosse field at Hilton Head High School) in honor of the late Joe Mommaener; the motion begins public-notice and SIC consultation steps, not a final naming vote.

The Beaufort County Board of Education on Aug. 5 moved to begin the community process to name a district athletic facility—the lacrosse field at Hilton Head High School—in honor of the late athletic director Joe Mommaener.
Board member Boatwright moved to initiate the process outlined in policy GC-3 section 8, including providing public notice and contacting local community leaders in advance of a public hearing. Board members clarified the motion applies to an ancillary facility (the lacrosse field), not naming a school, and described the typical steps: School Improvement Council (SIC) input at the school level, operations-committee review, a public hearing, and final board action.
The board discussed whether the process should originate with the SIC or be initiated by the board; members agreed the motion would usher the established steps forward and ensure the operations committee and SIC are engaged. The motion passed by voice vote.
Next steps: District staff will coordinate SIC notice, schedule a public hearing and process community input before the board considers a final naming vote.
