Wapello County schedules three public hearings on new on‑site wastewater ordinance

Wapello County supervisors on Tuesday set three public hearings to take public comment on a proposed on‑site wastewater ordinance that county staff and the Board of Health have reviewed.
Randy, a county staff member, told the board the draft is intended to codify policies and procedures so “contractors and homeowners know what’s expected.” He said the county attorney and the Board of Health reviewed the draft and recommended proceeding to public notice. The board approved advertising hearings on June 30 at 9:30 a.m., July 14 at 9:30 a.m. and July 28 at 9:30 a.m.
The ordinance, as described to the board, is focused on local on‑site wastewater (septic) systems and will clarify permitting and contractor responsibilities. Randy said the hearings could be used to conduct three separate readings if the board chooses, or to waive later readings after public comment.
The hearings will be publicly posted and staff said they will return with any statutory citations or additional wording needed to tie the ordinance to Iowa law. The board did not take a final vote on the ordinance at the meeting; the item was scheduled for the advertised public hearings.
