RSU 16 superintendent introduces himself; school board narrows facility scenarios, resident raises cemetery upkeep concerns

Mechanic Falls — Superintendent Todd Sanders of RSU 16 introduced himself to the Mechanic Falls Joint Council & Planning Board at its Oct. 2 meeting and offered to bring the district budget to the council for discussion.
Mary Martin, speaking as a representative of the RSU 16 School Board, updated the council on the Task Force report that examined facility options. Martin said the board had narrowed the possibilities to two scenarios: keep the current three elementary schools, or move to a two-school model "one school for pre-K thru 2nd grade and the other for 3rd thru 6th grades." She said the board organized its recommended steps into a "Now, next and later" framework and established a steering committee to develop final recommendations.
The superintendent told the council he wants to work collaboratively with the town and said he would come to present the RSU 16 budget and to address questions from councilors and residents.
During public comment, Rebecca Powell raised concerns about Maple Hill Cemetery, saying veterans' gravesites are not being adequately maintained and that she hopes to be appointed to the cemetery board. The Town Manager provided the council with a spreadsheet of town and private cemeteries and referenced state statute guidance on municipal responsibilities; any proposed stipend for upkeep was tabled for later consideration.
