School board update, Community Day request and bridge‑naming proposal draw public comments at Mechanic Falls meeting

At the Dec. 4 meeting, members of the public addressed the council on school funding, a community event and a proposal to name the rebuilt downtown bridge for Mechanic Falls native Bill Dunlop.
Mary Martin, speaking for the RSU #16 School Board, asked the council to appoint a representative at the January meeting to serve on the RSU #16 2024 Budget Committee and noted the district's budget will be voted at the municipal election on June 11, 2024. Martin said RSU #16 closed for three days following the Lewiston shootings and "applied for and were granted a waiver from the state and will not have to make up the days missed." She also said the district has chosen to keep all three elementary schools in the district and has applied to the Department of Education for renovation funding, expecting a response by February 2024; any funding would be a mix of grant and loan depending on subsidy level.
Jessica Smith, representing the Community Day Committee, asked the council for a submission deadline to request inclusion in the town's 2024 budget; Town Manager Vic Hodgkins replied that he had already added Community Day as a budget line and suggested staff follow up to discuss numbers.
Resident Eriks Petersons proposed that when the downtown bridge over the Little Androscoggin is rebuilt in 2025 it be named for local sailor Bill Dunlop, who gained national attention in the 1980s for solo Atlantic sailing and was later lost at sea attempting to circumnavigate. Petersons asked the council for a supporting resolution to carry to the legislature; Councilor Paula Stotts moved for such a resolution, Councilor Darrell Young seconded, and the council voted 5-0 in support. The council's vote was recorded as a resolution in favor of submitting the naming request to the legislature.
