School board asks Mechanic Falls to help repair storm-damaged Elm Street School playground

Mary Martin, speaking for the RSU #16 School Board, updated the council on the board’s strategic planning and thanked Chair Tarsha Downing for serving on the Strategic Planning Team. Jessica Smith, chair of the School Board Operations subcommittee, told the council that a whole section of the Elm Street School playground is unusable following recent storms and described needed repairs: removal of old fencing, excavation, grading and delivery of gravel. She said the district does not have the required equipment to complete the work.
Town Manager Vic Hodgkins said he had received an email from John Hawley, RSU #16 Director of Operations, outlining the scope of work and requesting Public Works assistance. Hodgkins said he has spoken with Scott Penney, who asked for dates and specifics before committing resources. Councilor Ray Lavoie and Councilor Sonny Morgan volunteered use of their equipment and time to assist.
The request was recorded for follow-up: town staff will coordinate timing and specifics with RSU #16 and Public Works. No vote was taken at the meeting; Hodkgins indicated staff would return with details as they are arranged.
