Board OKs brief park-hour extensions for July Fourth and Oktoberfest events

The Waukesha City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Board unanimously approved June 16 short-term extensions to park closing times to 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and Friday, Sept. 19, to allow for safe and orderly disbandment after large events.
Mark Thompson, the department’s newly promoted Recreation Services Manager, told the board the events themselves will end at 10:00 p.m., and the hour-long extension would keep staff and volunteers in the parks to clear and secure sites. "We are looking for approval to extend park hours to 11PM on Thursday, July 3, and then also on Friday, September 19," Thompson said.
Board members asked whether the extension should also apply to rain dates; Thompson confirmed the request covers those contingency dates. Alderman Wells moved approval with rain dates; a colleague seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Because the requested action covers equipment purchases (handled administratively) and routine event operations, staff said the equipment purchases would not go before the full city council; the pour-in-place surfacing contract will be bid and later considered by the Board of Public Works if it requires public construction contracting.
The extensions will be implemented under existing operational control of Parks, Recreation and Forestry staff for the two listed event dates and their rain dates.
