Cemetery Director Karen told the Waukesha City Cemetery Commission on June 9 that several operational projects are underway at Prairie Home Cemetery, including an imminent fountain replacement, a chapel HVAC upgrade requiring temporary office relocation and upcoming CIP work.
Karen said the autumn garden fountain replacement is scheduled to begin the next day and is expected to be completed around June 20. She also said the Cemetery Chapel building is getting a new HVAC system starting the same week; "the office staff will be relocated to City Hall, for 3 to 4 weeks," Karen said, and the chapel will not be available for rental while work is underway. Karen said she will post signage and maintain phone service as staff alternate between locations.
She said the cemetery team is starting work on the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget this month and plans to submit a draft in early July. Engineering is preparing an RFP for tuckpointing work on the administration building, security cameras remain on a pending list, and new equipment ordered through the CIP (a gator and a mower) has been received and is in service. Karen also noted seasonal workers have started for the summer.
Separately, the Friends of Prairie Home Cemetery reported on recent fundraising: members said a Taco John’s fundraiser raised close to $500 (one member suggested it may have been closer to $600) and that the group is planning the second annual Tombstone Trot for Oct. 19 and is seeking sponsors. The Friends have updated bylaws to be a membership organization and are printing new brochures.
Commissioners asked about contingency plans for chapel rentals during HVAC work and about signage and communication to residents; Karen said staff will notify the public and return with CIP details when available.
