Grant consultant announces $1 million state funding request; local clergy urge new school in Roselle

During the public-comment portion of the Roselle Public School District Board of Education meeting, Felonia Saxton, president of Garden States and Associates, introduced her firm and described recent fundraising outreach on the district's behalf.
"Our firm has prepared and submitted funding requests on behalf of the district and has already secured a $1 million funding commitment from our state senator Joe Cryan through a budget resolution request," Saxton said, adding that the funding is subject to final state budget approval. She said her firm is pursuing additional appropriations requests and coordinating outreach to federal and state lawmakers to support district capital and facility needs.
Saxton identified her firm as a grant-writing and funding-development consultant working with the district on items such as HVAC upgrades, playground repairs and other capital projects. She said the firm coordinates letters of support and encourages elected officials to tour district schools to better understand needs.
Later in the public-comment period, a community speaker identifying himself as Reverend Atkins urged the board to continue pushing for a new school, saying recent and planned housing developments are increasing enrollment. He cited developments on St. George Avenue and East 4th Avenue and said crowding will continue without additional school capacity.
Reverend Atkins noted past funding efforts and collaborations with municipal partners and told the board he supports continued outreach to assembly members and other officials to move a school project forward.
The board closed public comment at about 9:05 p.m.; after public comment the board voted to return to executive session for personnel matters and later adjourned the meeting at about 10:45 p.m.
